One of the best things about the 4th of July is that it's smack dab in the middle of the summer. While this statement may seem obvious, what I mean is, it's different than Christmas or Thanksgiving because of the abundance of produce available--fresh, local, and very in season. Blueberries and strawberries lend themselves to Patriotic Desserts, but there are many other ways to use fresh fruit in your Fourth of July menu.
Blackberries are played up in these portable bars. Throw some peaches on the grill while you eat your burgers and serve them with sweetened sour cream. And raspberries will steam the show when served in this ice cream cake. Check out our gallery of 60 Fruit Desserts for more ideas. And of course, the most downhome way to have fruit in a dessert is in a cobbler, crumble, or crisp.
Are you bringing a dessert, main or side to your celebration Saturday?

I made the raspberry ice-cream cake last week -- but created only one layer of berries/ice-cream between the pound cake. Plus I added blackberries which were delicious!

Very nice! You made your own red, white, and blue (ish black) dessert. What are you making for the fourth?
